Germany's Smallest State Capital

Since its foundation by Henry the Lion, Mecklenburg's oldest city has always been the navel of this state. Set in the middle of an idyllic water landscape, the blue of the lakes has always dominated. They take up a quarter of the city's area and in the middle of Lake Schwerin "swims" the imposing castle.

Unesco World Heritage Site

The Schwerin Residence Ensemble, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2024, is a fascinating testimony to the history and culture of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With the magnificent Schwerin Palace in the center, surrounded by lakes and historic gardens, this ensemble embodies the perfect harmony of architecture and nature. The impressive buildings and carefully maintained gardens invite visitors to immerse themselves in the glorious past and experience the beauty of this unique cultural heritage.

Floating fairytale castle

The castle floats on a small island in the large Lake Schwerin. Fairytale-like, graceful and delicate at the same time, it rises proudly and full of dignity out of Germany's fourth largest lake. The impressive ancestral gallery, royal state rooms and the orangery are not to be missed. The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliament is now based where the hearts once ruled.

Stroll through the city like something out of a picture book

Stroll through the streets of Schwerin and you will see one architectural beauty after another. The city's oldest building is the Gothic cathedral - one of the most beautiful and imposing brick churches in Germany. The 117-metre-high tower was only added to the church, which was completed in 1416, a good 100 years ago.

Other than that, the city is characterized by the baroque and historicizing styles of the 19th century. For example, the town hall vis-à-vis the cathedral. With its Tudor-style façade, it is reminiscent of an English castle. In grand ducal Schwerin, even the train station and post office are a feast for the eyes. From the modern shopping streets in the city center, you can walk along romantic riverside promenades.

Cultural enjoyment

In the city of the seven lakes, you will find true cultural treasures - and as far as the eye can see: for example, the traditional Mecklenburg State Theatre is located in what is probably Schwerin's most beautiful square, the Old Garden - together with the State Museum's Picture Gallery, it is a symbol of the popular city of music and art.

Numerous major events such as the Schwerin Summer of Culture, the , the film festival, the dragon boat festival on the Pfaffenteich and top-class exhibitions and concerts entice visitors to take a trip to the state capital with its fairytale flair all year round.

    Warnowtal circular route

    The river with the most water in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern impresses with its versatility. Sometimes the Warnow meanders peacefully through flower meadows and floodplain forests, sometimes it rushes like a mountain stream over large boulders and fallen trees. A wild and romantic adventure not only for cyclists.

    Residence Cities Circuit

    The Dukes of Mecklenburg left behind a veritable flood of castles. Through disputes over the regency, they divided the land several times. The circular route follows the tracks of the dukes to the former residences - government palaces, summer residences, pleasure and hunting palaces.

    In the southwest of the country, the water sparkles in enchanting diversity. One blue pearl follows the next. There are over ninety in the Sternberg Lake District Nature Park alone.     St. Birgitta Pilgrimage Route

    Today's Birgitta Pilgrimage Route runs from Sassnitz on the island of Rügen via the Hanseatic City of Stralsund, Güstrow, the State capital Schwerin on to Zarrenthin and on to Lower Saxony. Past masterpieces of brick Gothic, through the Sternberg Lake District and to former monasteries - this is how the pilgrimage route of St. Birgitta is believed to have been in 1341.

      Youth temple

      The Youth Temple in the southern palace garden, rebuilt in 2014, is a romantic vantage point. From here you can enjoy beautiful views of the Lazy Lake, the Greenhouse Garden and the Alexandrine Monument, as well as the Schwerin Palace Garden.

      The officers' mess in Schwerin was built between 1897 and 1900 and is picturesquely situated on Ostdorfer Berg, opposite the castle and above the baroque lawn cascade. The building, an example of neo-Renaissance architecture, houses a magnificent officers' mess and is part of the historic barracks ensemble that has been preserved to this day. After extensive renovation work, the building now serves as company headquarters.

      Annastrasse in Schwerin, built between 1862 and 1866, presents a series of neo-Renaissance villas that served as residences for aristocratic families and wealthy citizens.       Museum Grinding Mill Schwerin

      From magnificent floors to fine walking stick knobs, works of art made of stone and precious stones were produced for the ducal court in the Schwerin Grinding Mill. The mill is located on the edge of the stately palace grounds and is in working order and used as a museum. Visitors can learn about stone cutting and stone grinding and get to the bottom of the living conditions of the day laborers and grinding millers. The museum is open all year round.

      Equestrian monument of Friedrich Franz II

      Grand ducal linen and bed chamber

      On behalf of the Grand Duke, architect Hermann Willebrand created the designs for a linen room. In 1878, after the demolition of the previous building, this was supplemented by the construction of a "bed chamber". Willebrand unified both components with a uniform design and a simple classical plaster façade.

      Schelfkirche Schwerin

      It is a rare beauty - the only pure brick Baroque church in the West Mecklenburg region. An architectural cousin of the Michel in Hamburg. Worth seeing is the crypt of the Mecklenburg dukes. The church is open daily and can be visited.

      The Neustädtische Palais served as the Grand Duke's temporary residence during the palace renovations and is located in the historic Puschkinstraße. With its style, characterized by French Renaissance and Baroque elements, it reflects the signature of the master builders Johann Joachim Busch and Hermann Willebrand. From a widow's residence to a grand ducal residence, it changed over the centuries and became state property in 1920.

      Court gardener's establishment

      In connection with the expansion and redesign of the palace gardens in the 19th century, the new "Hofgaertner-Etablissement" was built in 1856/57 to a design by architect Hermann Willebrand. The building served as the court gardener's residence and service building and was therefore located in the immediate vicinity of this garden area.

      Swing bridge at Schwerin Castle

      Since 1897, a revolving bridge has connected the castle island with Schwerin's castle garden. It enabled transport ships to sail into the castle lake. The rotating mechanism is shown in action on special occasions, such as the Schwerin Castle Festival in June or the "Days of Industrial Culture on the Waterfront" in September.

      The Commander's House on the south bank of the Pfaffenteich in Schwerin is an elegant example of neoclassical architecture and served as the official residence of the commander of the Grenadier Guards Battalion. Built between 1836 and 1837, it is a symbol of the reform and modernization of the Mecklenburg military under Grand Duke Paul Friedrich.

      Open-air museum for folklore Schwerin-Mueß

      In the historic village ensemble directly on Schwerin Lake, visitors stroll between old farmhouses, fruit trees, herb beds and through the restored garden of a village teacher.       Schwerin Castle - Gardens

      Though the Palace outshines almost everything around it, there is one more attraction on that island which you shouldn’t miss. To the left of the main entrance, walking through the castle garden, you will find the charming orangery. It is a delicate construction made of cast iron and glass, a unique example of 19th century architecture and one of a kind in Germany. With its parkways, arcades, flower beds, sculptures, and the cross channel the baroque-style castle garden knows how to impress. The garden is public and open to visitors.

      Memorial and memorial site "The Mother

      The memorial "The Mother" is located on the federal highway 321 between Raben Steinfeld and Schwerin at the height of the Störkanal. As a reminder for future generations and in reverence for the victims of National Socialism, it was inaugurated in 1975 and still commemorates the death march of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp inmates.
