Under the motto, “Life Isn’t a Walk in the Park,” the humorous art of the widely known cartoonist Mario Larswill be on display starting November 14. In over 100 drawings, the artist’s ironic perspective has visitors laughing heartily at the everyday little problems and pitfalls that everyone stumbles into from time to time. As always with Mario Lars, his focus is sharply tuned to the endearing problems of couples, but the cartoonist also turns his keen eye and sharp pen to the animal kingdom, world events, and the family hustle and bustle of Christmas. At the Kulturforum, Mario Lars is now exhibiting not only his cartoons—which he now draws on the computer—but also several works painted on canvas, which are, of course, delightfully silly or curiously ironic.
Mario Lars was born in Hagenow in 1964 and fled from there after thirty days to the nearest big city: Schwerin—well, whatever you’d call a “big city.” In school, he memorized the 26 letters of the alphabet, the umlauts, and the ß, and earned an A in art. He got an A in gym, too—though you wouldn’t know it to look at him today. After school, Mario Lars earned a living as a preschool teacher, a painter, and a miller’s apprentice; as a shepherd, a soldier, a truck driver, and a lathe operator; as a tool room attendant, a painter, a writer, and a welder (he even broke a sweat at work once).
He spent most of his life working at the Schweriner Volkszeitung, where he was the department head responsible for layout, graphics, and photos. In 2014, he grew tired of just telling jokes on the side and has been making a living as a freelance artist ever since.
Today, Mario Lars works from his media office in Schwerin and lives at the Schulzenhof in Gneven. He has four children, a wife, half a tractor, and no dog.
Mario Lars’s work can be found in numerous newspapers and magazines from Vorpommern to Bavaria, in a number of books, and as animations on television. He has received awards for his drawings time and again, which he finds embarrassing—especially when it’s not first prize.
