Water beneath the keel and wind in the sails
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania offers two completely different sailing worlds—and both are fascinating.
On the Baltic Sea, you’ll find vast horizons, a fresh breeze, and a coastline full of anchorages, port cities, and a maritime atmosphere. From Wismar through Rostock and Stralsund to Rügen and Usedom—each leg of the journey tells its own story.
Inland lies the Mecklenburg Lake District, one of Europe’s largest lake regions, right before you. Over 2,000 lakes, connected by tranquil rivers and canals, form a region that invites you to slow down. The Müritz, Germany’s largest inland lake, is the heart of the region—and perfect for both experienced sailors and beginners.
From the lake district, the journey continues along the interconnected waterways toward Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The Lake Schwerin enchants visitors with a panorama that is second to none: In the background, Schwerin Castle stands majestically right on the shore—recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And for those who want to sail even further: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is part of Germany’s Lake District – the extensive network of waterways that connects Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with Brandenburg and Berlin.
With over 25,000 berths, numerous marinas, boat charter options, and sailing schools, you’ll find everything you need for your sailing trip in this vacation destination.
Sailing for Everyone – From Pros to Crew Members
No experience is necessary. Many providers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offer authentic sailing experiences: on sporty catamarans, on comfortable excursion yachts—or, most notably, on the traditional Zeesboote.
Zeesboats – Traditional Sailing Vessels with a Rich History
The Zeesboats are the soul of the Bodden. With their distinctive brown sails and flat hulls, they have been gliding across the calm waters of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst region for generations. Originally used as fishing boats for Zees fishing— trawling in the Bodden—they are now living testaments to maritime tradition. The net boats, once indispensable companions to coastal fishermen, can also be experienced up close today.
Sailing along on a Zeesboot is more than just an outing: You’ll feel the silence over the Bodden, see the coast from a perspective that no beach walk can offer, and let yourself be transported back to another time. For example, Zeesboot tours depart daily from Wustrow Harbor—just sign up and set sail.
