In her new show, “Everything Used to Be Cooler!,” Germany’s most successful live drag artist looks back with wit, warmth, and self-deprecating humor on a time when not everything was better, but some things were more laid-back.
Her aim isn’t to romanticize the ’80s and ’90s, but to recapture something wonderful from her own youth: more of a twinkle in the eye, more quick wit, more enjoyment of imperfection, the joy of speaking your mind, of listening closely, of laughing together, and of a life that doesn’t lose its cool at the slightest friction. Drawing on her own exciting—and in many ways slightly scandalous—life story, Elke Winter shows that humor is the most elegant way to cope with reality.
