Sophisticated drapery, delicate lace, shimmering silk, and sumptuous brocades—at the European courts, fashion became a showcase of power, wealth, and style. Tailoring and painting vied for perfection: every detail of the precious garments was meant to impress and visibly convey the rank of the subjects. Court portraits therefore often reveal less about the personalities of those depicted than about their status and political significance.
