"Nachebe—By the Sleeping River" with Olaf Bellmann
“Nachebe – By the Sleeping River” describes daily life in the Toposa village of Nameritaba, a small settlement in the far southeast of South Sudan. The daily life of this nomadic people is characterized by a rhythm of routine. Everything is subordinated to the well-being of the animals, for the families’ survival depends on them. That is all they have.
The show invites viewers to spend a day with the girl Nachebe in Nameritaba—milking cows, preparing meals, repairing huts, threshing millet, and fetching water from the nearby river.
Going beyond the familiar images of disaster and the media’s overly romanticized idyll of Africa, the show presents a realistic picture of life in Nameritaba through numerous original audio recordings and striking images and videos.
The villagers themselves have their say as they talk about their village.
