Claudia Meurer (saxophone), Martina Weidner (viola) and Frieder Rohn (cello) focus on the Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach in this chamber concert and demonstrate with their program, “Aus den Fugen geraten…,” that the strictest order can conceal the greatest musical freedom.
Inventions, fantasias, variations, and fugues by the Baroque master, illuminated by surprising detours: Bach’s two-part inventions stand alongside jazz inventions by Lennie Niehaus, and the Allemande from the First Cello Suite flows seamlessly into a free improvisation. The program also features a selection from the Goldberg Variations and a viola da gamba sonata, which takes on a sound all its own simply through the choice of instrument.
