Mecklenburg Baltic Coast

Vacation in the Cradle of Bathing Culture

Vacationing at the birthplace of the German Baltic Sea bathing culture - the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast is where bathing vacations for recreational purposes got their start: When in 1793 the Mecklenburg Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I, together with his personal physician, recognized that bathing in the Baltic Sea had a particularly beneficial effect on health, he laid the foundation for the "summer resort by the sea" with the first seaside resort Heiligendamm.

Here, where the interplay between history, tradition and modernity exudes a very special charm, you can discover ancient tree-lined avenues, wide fields, magnificent castles and manor houses as well as sublime brick Gothic alongside the architecture of the moonlit Baltic Sea. The romantic harbors along the Baltic Sea coast are the perfect place to experience the Hanseatic charm and maritime flair of the , while the fantastic sunsets on the miles of sandy beaches enchant holidaymakers.

Vacation on the Baltic Sea coast

Heiligendamm Seaside Resort

As Germany's oldest seaside resort, vacationers in Heiligendamm enjoy seaside vacations in an atmosphere steeped in history. The "White City by the Sea" attracts with its sun-soaked bathing beaches in front of the magnificent backdrop of the historic seaside resort architecture. Not only families with children experience an entertaining ride with nostalgia factor on the narrow-gauge Molli bathing train.

Hanseatic City of Wismar

Those interested in culture should plan a trip to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Wismar as part of their vacation itinerary. The historic buildings of the picturesque old town have written architectural history as North German Brick Gothic. Cyclists can reach the historic Hanseatic city on a tour along the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route.

Baltic Resort Boltenhagen

The second oldest seaside resort in Mecklenburg guarantees an unforgettable time not only for beach vacationers: for culture enthusiasts, a detour to Bothmer Castle, the largest preserved Baroque complex in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as to the 290-meter-long pier - the town's landmark - is worthwhile. Animal lovers and families can, with a little luck, watch seals on the sandbanks on the Baltic coast during a cutter trip.

Baltic Resort Graal-Müritz

A beach vacation can be ideally combined with a hiking or biking tour in the Baltic Sea resort of Graal-Müritz. In addition to a barefoot path in the coastal forest, the hike is rewarded with a magnificent sea view. Already Franz Kafka and Erich Kästner appreciated the special mixture of forest and Baltic Sea air.

Baltic Sea Resort Kühlungsborn

As the largest bathing and recreation resort on the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast, Kühlungsborn impresses with its wide sandy beaches and one of the longest beach promenades in the region. Nature lovers will find peace and relaxation in Kühlungsborn's extensive municipal forest. The Bastorf lighthouse is suitable as a starting point or destination for fruitful hiking tours.

on the Baltic coast

Cycling

Cyclists will find nearly 180 bikeable kilometers along the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast. The tour along the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route leads from Boltenhagen via the island of Poel to Graal-Müritz. Along the way, you will pass cliffs, coastal forests and lighthouses - and, of course, you can't miss the fish sandwiches that are typical of the region.

Beach Vacation

Wide sandy beaches, long promenades and the seemingly endless sea make the Baltic Sea coast an ideal place for beach vacations. With Heiligendamm as Germany's first seaside resort, a traditional bathing culture has developed along the Mecklenburg Baltic coast, where it is wonderful to relax.

Film lovers take note: A very special city tour awaits fans of "SOKO Wismar" in the World Heritage city. On the traces of the popular crime series it goes to well-known filming locations. The city tour of a special kind offers fascinating insights behind the scenes and is an unforgettable event for many.

Riding Vacation

It is the dream of many horse lovers: a ride on the Baltic Sea beach. But not only on the sandy beach it is good to ride. The Rostock Heath, the largest contiguous coastal forest in Germany, has about 60 kilometers of bridle paths along the Baltic Sea coast in the middle of an extensive forest area. Beginners and returning riders can build up trust in the graceful animals during a riding course.

Water Sports

With almost 260 kilometers of coastline, the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast is not without reason popular among water sports enthusiasts and recreational captains. Whether it's an excursion on a sailboat or water fun while surfing: The Baltic Sea offers ideal conditions for a day at or on the water. In sailing schools or surfing lessons, even beginners can dare their first attempts.

The Most Popular Sights on the Baltic Coast of Mecklenburg

Bothmer Castle & Castle Park

As one of the largest baroque palace complexes in northern Germany, culture enthusiasts and romantics should pay a visit to Bothmer Castle. The path to the castle and the surrounding park leads through the nearly 270-meter-long Festonallee. Built in the 18th century, it is situated on an island surrounded by a moat, following the Dutch model. In the summer months, numerous music concerts attract visitors to the castle park.

Rhododendron Park Graal-Müritz

It is unique in Mecklenburg: the Rhododendron Park in Graal-Müritz. Located directly behind the dunes of the Baltic Sea beach, nature lovers can enjoy the colorful splendor of the species-rich heather in one of the largest gardens of its kind in Germany. Around 2,500 plants fill the air here between May and June with their unmistakable scent.

Rostock Zoo

A visit to the Rostock Zoo is worthwhile for a family vacation: Around 4,200 animals from all over the world can be marveled at here in just one day. While the Darwineum sends young and old on a spectacular journey through evolution, they meet man's closest relative in the Tropical Hall: the playful orangutans and gorillas bursting with strength. In the Polarium, on the other hand, things are frosty. Here polar bears, penguins and numerous sea creatures can be marveled at.

Bastorf Lighthouse

Situated at a height of 78 meters and with an own height of almost 21 meters, the red brick tower has the highest beacon, which can be found at the German coastal waters: The height of the fire of the Bastorf lighthouse reaches a whole 95.3 meters. For hikers, the tower thus represents a suitable hiking destination that is not easily lost sight of.

World Heritage House in Wismar

Families and those interested in culture can take a look at the history of the Hanseatic city through the ages at the World Heritage House in Wismar. In the process, visitors also learn a lot of interesting facts about the function and goals of UNESCO, while on the upper floor, the restored Wallpaper Hall tells the Greek myth of "Telemach's Journey to the Island of the Goddess Calypso" in an impressive panoramic painting.
