Hunting for motifs with amateur photographer Maik Gutmann

Glittering and foamy faces

Every time you think you know your beach, it presents itself in a different light mood, says Maik Gutmann and finds this very exciting. The amateur photographer is often out and about in his home region, photographing the Baltic Sea with all its glittering and shimmering faces. He is also fascinated by Graal-Müritz – Seebrücke, where he likes to take long exposures. It is 350 meters long, three meters wide and one of the most beautiful photo motifs of the Baltic seaside resort.

However, he also enjoys looking for motifs in Kühlungsborn. Here, he is particularly interested in the famous Baltic architecture with its classicist and art nouveau buildings, which line the coastline of the seaside resort like pearls on a string. Especially in summer, Kühlungsborn harbour is a lively meeting place for visitors, who can marvel at the authentic backdrop of a Baltic seaside resort on the jetties, from small dinghies to chic yachts, from rubber dinghies to fishing boats.

Photography on the beach: on foot in search of a motif

On sunny days, Maik Gutmann walks the seven kilometers between Kühlungsborn and Heiligendamm along the beach. And takes pictures of everything he sees. His motivation: to capture the beauty of his homeland. Of course, this also includes the famous Grand Hotel scenery in Heiligendamm or the Doberan Minster, the „pearl of northern German brick Gothic“. However, it takes a certain amount of courage to capture the special features of his motifs. For a very special image composition and the appropriate light, he is happy to spend a few minutes being patient, freely adapted from Arthur Schnitzler: „To be ready is much, to be able to wait is more, but to seize the right moment is everything.“

Due to its wildness and remoteness, it has been declared one of the most beautiful beaches in Germany and Europe several times.
