One special feature at the coast is the "Nienhäger Holz", a 180 hectare mixed forest, which borders the Baltic seaside resort Nienhagen and is therefore located directly at the Baltic Sea. This protected forest is better known by locals as the ghost forest. The uniqueness of the coastal forest lies in the bizarrely shaped deciduous trees.
The picturesque deformations were caused in the course of many years by the salty, humid sea air and the wind. Most of the trees are oak, beech, hornbeam and ash. A cycle and hiking trail runs through the ghost forest on which the region can be easily explored.
