In the heart of the Rostock Heath, an unusual farm stand awaits you: The Pilzmanufaktur brings fresh, gourmet mushrooms to the world—from the lemony-scented lemon oyster mushroom to the fluffy white pom-pom mushroom. Created as a community effort, with care, and without the pressure to perform.
Anyone who thought mushrooms were just brown and round will learn otherwise in Rostock-Markgrafenheide. In the farm stand at the Pilzmanufaktur—nestled in the heart of the Rostock Heath, Germany’s largest contiguous coastal forest—there’s a stunning array of varieties: the Pom-Pom with its tufted spines, the lemon oyster mushroom in bright yellow with a hint of citrus, the hearty king oyster mushroom, which is almost reminiscent of porcini, plus shiitake, velvet cap, and oyster mushrooms.
There’s more to each mushroom than just cultivation. People with mental health conditions work at the facility—at their own pace, without pressure, but with genuine joy in what they do. Community and meaningful work shape everyday life here. Anyone who takes home a basket full of these fine mushrooms takes a piece of that experience with them.
Fresh or air-dried, with seasonal additions of local fruits and vegetables—the selection at the farm stand changes, but it’s always worth a detour. If you’re not sure which varieties are currently in stock, just ask briefly before your visit. And if it’s your first time holding a “pom-pom” in your hand—well, you’ll hardly be able to hold back a smile.
