Christmas market and Advent magic at Ulrichshusen Castle

Atmospherically illuminated Ulrichshusen Castle at Christmas time, surrounded by trees and a moat with reflections in the evening light.

At Ulrichshusen Castle, the Mecklenburg Lake District shows its mindful side. In December with a big dose of Christmas spirit. We accompanied Kamila and her daughter Olivia on a family girls' weekend. It's all about Advent - and time for the essentials.

Everyday life is often stressful for Kamila. As a working mother, she tries to juggle all her life roles. Olivia, her 13-year-old daughter, wants more attention from time to time than everyday life can provide. More affection. More listening. And ultimately, it is also important to create memories together. That's why Kamila has planned a trip to Ulrichshusen. A weekend for two. With everything that goes with it. A long sleep, long walks, shared memories, an Advent market with cookies and punch and a little Christmas concert for the soul. You simply have to make time for the most important things in life. This weekend is a conscious conclusion to our year.

Two people explore the ruined desert church in Ulrichshusen, surrounded by stone arches, autumn leaves and bare trees.

A walk to the ruins of the "Desert Church"

Kamila has chosen a special place for her excursion. Ulrichshusen is a 16th century castle that stands defiantly on a hill. Right next to a lake. On two Advent weekends in December, the estate is transformed into a Christmas idyll. There is a tranquil market in the concert barn, Christmas concerts in the castle and plenty of peace and quiet for feelings and thoughts that are often neglected in the daily hustle and bustle. Ulrichshusen is a bit like an escape from everyday life for the two of them. To the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves and the creaking of floorboards in the historic setting of the castle.

Before heading to the Advent market, the pair start their day with a long walk. Their destination: the »Wüste Kirche«, a mysterious ruin in the middle of the forest. Built in 1271 and destroyed in 1458, today it juts out of the landscape like a broken tooth. Even in dreary weather, the walk is refreshing and the church ruins, which are now part of the Mecklenburg Chapel Trail, are fascinating. The bench in front of the ruins is used to drink a warm cup of tea. The atmosphere is brighter. The weather is less so, although the wind that sings through the bony winter rocks gives this place just the right amount of tension and mysticism. Is now the time for knots and cabbage?

The Advent market at Ulrichshusen Castle

The Advent market in Ulrichshusen opens at around 12 noon. Then the stalls open with their gifts and the castle's own Christmas kitchen serves up all kinds of treats. Kamila and Olivia are ready for a hearty lunch. The teenager goes for the truffle pasta from the Parmesan loaf, while Kamila prefers game and dumplings.

Christmas presents are discussed over lunch. Maybe you'll find a little something or two for Christmas Eve. After a delicious waffle for dessert, Olivia heads straight for the Christmas bakery. Baumkuchenspitzen, walnut dreams and cranberry granola cakes go into the pots for home. At the Christoph Bader ceramics workshop stand, they could have conveniently bought the cookie tin at the same time. But they were more interested in the crowns, which Kamila thinks are "very chic" as a vase.

The Advent market in Ulrichshusen enchants with handicrafts and unusual eye-catchers. A yoga center sells shawls, goldsmith Carolin Stoppa her jewelry creations, in which she doesn't want to see any right angles. It should and does look like it has grown. Steffi from Usedom sells candles in the shape of shells, lighthouses or fir trees made from regional rapeseed wax and the Ulrichshusen workshop entices visitors with particularly fine vinegar.

There are plenty of delicacies here. Country jams from Austria, onion lard bread from master confectioner Enrica Korsinski, who has made it her mission to produce exclusively with organic butter and organic spelt flour. Kamila thinks the marzipan breads with coffee make a lovely gift for friends and buys a handful straight away. »Look, Mom«, calls Olivia. She stands in front of small art frames with sayings on them and little stones stuck like figures. »The key to happiness is on the inside«, I think it's really nice. Kamila lovingly strokes her daughter's head. »Yes, that's really nice.«

See-Sation and Advent music

With this sentence in mind, the two of them stroll towards the lake. Lake Ulrichshus is surrounded by a strong breeze today. The seaweed dances on the water. The two of them walk down to the jetty and gaze in the direction of the castle. »Nice that we are here«, remarks Olivia. »Just the two of us, without work or phones. This way we can really enjoy the time," she says and simply pauses for a moment.

That was exactly the aim of this weekend for two. Which is yet to reach its climax. The two of them are drawn back to their hotel room. To change for the classical concert in the evening, which is taking place in the castle. Under the eyes and ears of the lord of the castle, Helmuth von Maltzahn. The horn quartet “german hornsound”, which was founded in 2010 by four former students of the horn class at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, will be performing this evening.

The concert is sold out, after all Ulrichshusen has been known for 30 years as a venue for classical music as part of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival. Olivia still doesn't quite know what to make of the concert. Horn? That's not exactly David Guetta or Sabrina Carpenter. But it is »so beautiful »full of feeling and immediately puts you in the Christmas mood«. The rest of the audience can only applaud and agree. The quartet really is an Advent weekend highlight.

The fire for Advent in Ulrichshusen is lit

Another nightcap? Isn't Olivia far too young for that? Kamila buys an apple-pear-ginger punch, non-alcoholic of course, and a mulled wine. »The first one this year!« Then it's time to warm up by the fire bowl. What a romantic backdrop this Ulrichshusen is! What a great weekend the two of them spent here in this cultural and historical gem. And so varied! Kamila strokes Olivia's back. We'll do that again next year. Olivia nods and smiles. And somehow she is sure that she has found the key to happiness today. And it's on the inside.
