Time for friendship: bikepacking tour with gravel bikes through the Müritz National Park and Mecklenburg Switzerland

It's Friday evening, the temperatures are mild and the weekend is just around the corner. Perfect prospects for a micro-adventure on the doorstep! And what could be more appealing than a bikepacking tour with gravel bikes and a few friends? Excursionists from the capital, for example, can easily reach the route between Neustrelitz and Demmin by train. It leads through forests, meadows and fields, right through the heart of the Müritz National Park and Mecklenburg Switzerland, keeping rivers, lakes and wetlands within easy reach at all times.

In addition to the scenic variety and numerous wow moments, the tour across Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also challenges cyclists with athletic ability: an astonishing 1,000 meters of elevation gain over a good 150 kilometers! And if you are a convinced bike packer and pack cleverly and with the appropriate packing list, you can easily store your light luggage for an eventful weekend on your bike - true to the motto: "reduce it to the max".

By the way: the bikepacking tour is particularly attractive in spring. That's when Mecklenburg Switzerland dresses its bends and hills in a blossoming garment of rapeseed yellow and bright green, while to the left and right of the trail, hay chew leisurely on lush stalks and gnarled chestnut trees have lit their candles everywhere.

A flying start: The three friends start their bikepacking tour in the picturesque, historic residential town of Neustrelitz.

Green-blue kick-off in Neustrelitz

»Watch out at platform 3! The regional express from Berlin is arriving.

The train doors slowly open at Neustrelitz main station. It has taken just one hour and fifteen minutes to get here from the center of the capital. And the best thing is that he also transported his luggage with him.

After a few firm pedal strokes, a paradise of green and blue awaits Sarah and her two buddies Vito and Thomas just outside the gates of the historic residential town in the Müritz National Park: past the Zierker See and the Großer Prälanksee, the first three hundred kilometers are a leisurely ride. If you have opted for bikepacking without a tent, the family-run bed and bike hotel »Kranichrast« in Schwarzenhof is a good place to spend the first night. Nothing but the sounds of nature and the gently rustling treetops accompany the happy sleepers here.

Not for calorie counters

Stop off at Üdi's rest area

If you want to eat out the next morning and don't need to count any calories, you shouldn't miss out on a breakfast stop at the neighboring beer garden »Üdi's Rastplatz«: ¨ly homemade cakes, hearty fish sandwiches, delicious coffee and other snacks give you strength for the second day in the saddle – or a pit stop en route. Üdi also has a heart for cyclists: there is a service station with a compressor air pump behind the house.

From here, the three friends continue on gravel paths and small country roads, past the glittering blue Feisnecksee and the Binnenmüritz to the tranquil spa town of Waren. The following lakeside path along the Tiefwarensee is no less tranquil: mossy chestnut trees, oaks and lime trees tower over the water, occasionally littering the surface of the lake. And it seems to be calling out to the bikepackers: »Get out of your clothes and into the water!« And why not? When the temperatures are right, such refreshment is more than welcome!

The three friends gather their strength for the next stage over coffee and cake.

Stop and go: At "Üdi's Rastplatz" in Schwarzenhof, it's worth taking a lively break.

It's smooth sailing here: always follow the signs to the next destination, Waren.

A stroke of luck: the Tiefwarensee is beautiful to look at and perfect for a dip in the cool water.

Peace and music at Ulrichshusen Castle

Perfect stopover for a bikepacking tour

After a few more kilometers through nature that is as lush as it is lovely, a real highlight awaits with Schloss & Gut Ulrichshusen on the lake of the same name. Far from the hustle and bustle, there is nothing but silence around this red-brick gem - interrupted only by the chirping of birds and the croaking of frogs. The house, which has been in the family for over 800 years, has a turbulent history to tell: It last burned down to the ground in 1987 for unknown reasons, was lovingly rebuilt in 1993 and reopened in 2001: With hotel rooms in the manor house, stables, castle, wheelwright's workshop and water mill, as well as vacation apartments, a restaurant and the concert barn. Top-class soloists and orchestras - from Anne-Sophie Mutter to Daniel Hope - perform here every year as part of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.

From the castle, the three friends drive down small, terraced streets surrounded by quarry walls to Lake Malchin. Your gaze wanders over picturesque villages, pretty woods and fields; avenues of trees provide shade and air that seems freshly washed.

Beauty like sand by the sea: Schloss & Gut Ulrichshusen is another highlight on the gravel bike tour.

A paradise for birds and nature lovers

At the campsite in Dahmen, exhausted cyclists will find ideal conditions for a rest: right on the lakeshore, they can take a seat with an unobstructed panoramic view between young families taking their youngsters for a walk. Boats dock at the jetty, a signpost points in the direction of an observation tower.

And the detour there is worth it: from the elevated perspective of the stilt house on the western shore of the lake, there is nothing but nature. As far as the eye can see. „Wow,“ Sarah reads enthusiastically from the display board. „There in the reed beds and on the water are great crested grebes, blackcaps and lapwings, and even the endangered reed warbler, bluethroat and white-tailed eagle can be found here! ” Their twittering and whistling is a treat for ears stressed by the noise of the city. A tip for amateur ornithologists: In the fall, flocks of greylag geese, cranes as well as flowering and seed geese regularly rest at Lake Malchin.

A break is a must! Sarah and her two buddies Vito and Thomas take a break at Lake Malchin to unwind.

Mecklenburg Switzerland? Or the Allgäu?

The bikepacking tour continues in a relaxed manner through a lovely hilly landscape, taking you along quiet side roads with flowering fruit trees and white birch trees through the middle of Mecklenburg Switzerland. Or is it the countryside after all? A short stop on a hill between G&uumlitz and Gorschendorf could almost give you the idea: Because here, gently rolling meadows in lush greenery guide your gaze down to Lake Kummerow, the fourth largest lake in the state.

Lush green is the backdrop to the stage in Mecklenburg Switzerland.

Contemplative rest on the Ascension Hill

Parallel to the lake is the Peene Valley nature reserve, one of the most pristine river valleys in northern Germany. Vito, Thomas and Sarah enjoy a particularly good view of the widely ramified river landscape, which some call the »Amazon of the North«, from Himmelfahrtsberg near Upost. It has this name because a Protestant open-air church service is held here every year on Ascension Day. But on all other days too, anyone who struggles up the sandy dirt track can lean their gravel bikes against the summit cross and take a contemplative break with a fantastic view.

Up close and personal with beavers and otters

A special kind of bikepacking gravel bike tour

Now it's almost all downhill to the finish in Demmin – the descent from Himmelfahrtsberg through the forest stretches for eight kilometers. Chestnut and beech trees can be found here, and if you take a short detour down to the Peene, you can dangle your legs in the water from the jetty. With a bit of luck, beavers and otters, which have been reintroduced along the river in the 1970s, can be seen in the twilight. And particularly attentive cyclists can even spot up to twelve different orchid species.
