At eye level with nature

The Sternberger Seenland, Feldberger Seenlandschaft, Mecklenburgische Kleinseenplatte and the Warnow, Mildenitz and Peene rivers are among the most beautiful canoeing areas in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Countless waterways and sparkling lakes enchant with their untouched nature and tranquillity. If you are looking for solitude, you will find it here. Many of the rivers and lakes only have a mild current and are therefore also suitable for beginners.

Canoeing on the Peene and watching beavers build castles or enjoying a lively trip on the Warnow between Sternberger Burg and Klein Raden - there's something for everyone here. If that's not enough, plan a canoe trip on the Baltic Sea. The currents and winds make this a real challenge, but with impressive views of the coast and the salty scent of the sea, it is also an insider tip for all water sports professionals.

Canoeing in the Mecklenburg Lake District – Feel the freedom, experience it mindfully

Canoeing in the Mecklenburg Lake District is the perfect opportunity to enjoy true freedom. With every paddle stroke, you dive deeper into the clear waters, the gently curving shoreline and the calm blue of the lake world - an experience that has a relaxing effect and gently touches the senses. Our waterways invite you to be mindful: Watch the reflection of the sun on the water, listen to the calls of the waterfowl and feel your body and mind come to rest. The paddling vacation is deliberately inviting – whether as a family-friendly round trip or as an individual stage through quiet canals – Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has the right offer for every group.

Canoeing to the rhythm of the seasons

Each season in the Mecklenburg Lake District offers its own unique canoeing experience. In spring, nature awakens – fresh greenery, birdsong and the first warm rays of sunshine accompany you carefully over mirror-smooth lakes. In summer, you can experience the lake district from its most inviting side: fields of water lilies open their flowers, children splash around on the shore and the long evenings invite you to enjoy the sunset from a canoe after a relaxing tour. Autumn is colorful and calm - golden leaves are reflected in the water, wafts of mist gently drift over the canals and you have the feeling of having the vastness all to yourself. Finally, in winter, silence returns. When the landscape is covered in frost and ice, the paddle rests, but the lake district shows you its pure, clear open space - an ideal moment to pause and plan your next adventure.

Paddling

Combine your paddling tour with other activities such as cycling, draisine, hiking, trekking or hydrobiking and experience nature in a variety of ways. Experienced paddlers go from inland waters to the high seas. Ocean kayaking on the Bodden and Baltic Sea, however, requires a little more in-depth knowledge of wind and current conditions. But we also have something very special: night paddling, winter paddling, dragon boat, barge, cutter or city paddling through Rostock City.

At the canoe rental points you can take your own equipment out on the water or use the canoe rental service: Rentals with modern equipment, shuttle service and transportation. And if you don't trust your sense of direction, there are of course also guided tours. Whether you're a beginner or a pro, a recreational paddler or an action-seeker, the rule is: get out on the water!

Canoe, Kayak or Canadian Canoe - what am I actually riding here?

When people talk about a canoeing vacation, they are actually referring to a tour in a kayak or Canadian canoe. That's right, there are two types of canoe, and both have very different characteristics. So if you want to hire a canoe from a canoe hire company in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, you have to choose between the two.

The kayak

Flexible, narrow and maneuverable - the kayak is the right boat for rapid whitewater rafting. Originally from the Arctic, the kayak has evolved into a popular paddle boat for a sporty break on the water. Whether on the lake, on rivers or along coasts: thanks to its maneuverability, the kayak is easy to use on calm and wilder waters with a little practice. It is propelled by a double paddle, which is dipped into the water alternately to the left and right of the boat. Some luggage can be carried by means of luggage straps at the bow or stern of the mostly closed canopy. If you want to go kayaking for several days, you should opt for a touring kayak that has sufficient storage space for food and luggage.

While the classic kayak only offers space for one person, a tandem or triple kayak can take up to three people on a canoe tour through Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Friends, couples or small families can rent a kayak together and get ready for an exciting adventure along Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's water-rich lake and river landscape.

The Canadian

However, the term „canoe“ usually refers to the Canadian canoe. It is wider than a kayak, has an open top and is propelled by a paddle. It is therefore more difficult and slower to propel than a kayak and requires the strength of two or more people. The canoeists sit or kneel on boards and the blade of the paddle is fully immersed in the water. If there are two canoeists, one paddles on the right and the other on the left. If there are three riders, the third rider supports the weaker side from the rear seat and is responsible for steering.

Thanks to its open canopy, the Canadier offers plenty of storage space for luggage. This makes the canoe particularly suitable for an extensive canoe tour, for example through the Mecklenburg Lake District. Why not explore Mecklenburg-Vorpommern by canoe from the river and combine the multi-day tour with a Campingurlaub? After all, there is always plenty of space for camping equipment on the Canadier. Thanks to its tilt resistance, the canoe is also suitable as a companion on canoe trips for families - equipped with life jackets and sufficient provisions, canoeing becomes a fun vacation experience for young and old alike.

FAQs about canoes

What makes canoeing in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern particularly appealing?

You will experience water travel in peace and space – quiet stretches of river valley, glittering lakes or the challenge of the ocean for advanced paddlers: paddling on the Baltic Sea with wind, currents and spectacular coastal views.

Can I paddle even if I have little experience?

Yes, many rivers are gently flowing and ideal for beginners. For beginners, there is modern rental equipment, shuttle service and guided tours - so you can paddle off in complete relaxation.

Where can I go canoeing in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern?

You paddle most through pristine nature, calm waters and unspoiled landscapes: the Sternberger Seenland, the Feldberger Seenlandschaft, the Mecklenburgische Kleinseenplatte and the Warnow, Mildenitz and Peene rivers offer gentle currents and are ideal for beginners.

What is the difference between a kayak and a canoe?

A kayak is narrow, agile and maneuverable – ideal for sporty tours and usually for one person. The Canadian is wider, open, offers plenty of storage space and room for two or more - good for longer tours and families.

Which boat is suitable for a multi-day tour?

The canoe offers enough space for your equipment – perfect for exploring the lake district with luggage and flexibly expanding your camping.

Where can I hire a canoe or book tours?

There are numerous providers at your disposal: e.g. 3W Wassersport in Malchow, Kanustation Mirow, Wasserwanderzentrum Dömitz, Pension Zur Scheune in Plau am See, Dschungelschute in Borkow, WANDERER – Kanu, Rad & Reisen in Oldenstorf.

Are there any special tours or activities?

With pleasure! You can experience night paddling, winter paddling, dragon boating, city paddling in Rostock or go on tours on barges, cutters and ocean kayaks on the Bodden and Baltic Sea.

Are there offers suitable for families or groups?

In any case! The canoe is stable and offers enough space for families. Groups can use jungle barges (e.g. up to 70 people) – adventure and togetherness included.

Which water regions are particularly suitable for nature observation?

For example, you can watch beavers building castles on the Peene, and along the Warnow you can experience lively trips with enchanting natural scenery.
