The unspoiled nature, the turbulent Baltic Sea, the special light - for centuries, artists have found wonderful sources of inspiration in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge created their world-famous masterpieces here. The artist colonies in Ahrenshoop, Schwaan and on the island of Hiddensee show unique works by formative artists of the region as well as contemporary works. Art halls and galleries offer changing exhibitions of nationally and internationally renowned sculptors, photographers and painters.

Light reflections on paper

Even today, artists and people who vacation here appreciate the advantages of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Carola Pieper, for example, lives on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. The painter lives with her family in a thatched cottage in Ahrenshoop. Her husband Jens restores fishing dinghies from the Bodden, rents out the boats and organizes trips.

Carola Pieper often sails on the nostalgic wooden boats and paints. She sits there in the shadow of the sail, observes the light reflections on the water surface, the rapidly changing play of light and shadow - and the motifs flow from the shellac ink pipette onto the paper. Art, for Carola Pieper, is like a meditation, a dialogue between her and the world. "In through the eyes and out through the fingertips" is Carola Pieper's motto. The artist needs nature to be able to paint.

Art events

Events such as Art:Open at Whitsun or Art Today provide insights into open studios, potteries and workshops - in direct contact with the artists themselves. Visitors are often allowed to wield a paintbrush themselves and discover their creative vein. The environmental photo festival in spring and the active photo autumn are also particularly exciting.
