The current bicycle traffic plan dates back to 2014 and is now set to be revised. The goal is to establish an up-to-date and sustainable foundation for the development of bicycle traffic in Rostock in the coming years. An important part of this process is citizen participation.
The Hanseatic and University City of Rostock aims to take the next decisive step toward becoming a sustainable, livable, and bicycle-friendly city by updating its bicycle transportation plan.
With the new bicycle traffic plan, the city aims to significantly increase the share of bicycle traffic in the modal split—as a cornerstone of eco-friendly transportation and as a contribution to achieving municipal climate goals. To this end, the city plans to create a resilient, high-quality, and safe bicycle network that supports everyone in Rostock in their daily lives, regardless of age, riding ability, or choice of transportation. At the heart of this is the vision of a city where cycling is a natural, safe, and comfortable part of daily life—from daycare centers to universities, from residential neighborhoods to industrial parks.
The vision of the new bicycle traffic plan is a “bicycle-friendly transportation environment for everyone.” It is not just about infrastructure, but about an integrated, comprehensive system: This includes safe main routes and secondary routes, good connections to public transportation, sufficient secure parking facilities, clear signage, modern standards, and infrastructure tailored to specific user groups.
