What digitization declares to be finished proves to be amazingly alive in art. Paper carries ideas, makes processes visible and itself becomes a material for sculptures and installations. It is light, almost always available and can be processed in an almost infinite number of ways. So it's no wonder that paper is still one of the most versatile and indispensable materials in art.
With works by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and the Berlin artists Renée (*1973) and Thomas Rapedius (*1975), the exhibition brings together works on and made of paper and shows how differently the material can be thought of and used artistically.
For Picasso, paper was often the starting point for his inexhaustible innovative power. In drawings and prints, he tested new techniques, broke with visual habits and constantly developed his visual language. In this way, he created one of the most extensive graphic oeuvres of the 20th century. With works from the Klewan Collection, the exhibition reveals a period of over three decades in Picasso's graphic work.
Paper also plays a central role in the works of Renée and Thomas Rapedius. In addition to drawings and photographs, their exploration extends into space, even to the point of imitating the material. In resonance with Picasso's works, the exhibition shows paper in all its diversity: as surface and body, as support and object, as material and illusion.
