Boualem Sansal Talks About Banned Books in Algeria

After the publication of an essay in 2006, Sansal’s writings were no longer circulated. He criticized the government’s Arabization policy and the suppression of Berber (or Amazigh) culture, and broke taboos such as maintaining contact with Israeli authors.

The 1991–2002 civil war, relations with France, Islamism, corruption, and the Jewish history of Africa are also social taboos that the author addresses in his books.
