Who could have guessed that Elsa Jean Krakowski would actually turn up on their doorstep one day? Debbie and Peter met the resolute widow from Denver on a cruise and were immediately taken with her. The fact that Elsa actually keeps the obligatory appointment to visit each other not only comes as a surprise; the spontaneously announced visit sends Debbie and Peter into a veritable panic. Not only do they have enough on their plates with their pubescent children and the passive-aggressive visitation from the neighboring property, but a quick internet check of their uninvited guest has revealed that Elsa is a notorious poisoner. Now they have to hastily weigh up which is the worse evil: risking their own lives and those of their children or telling a strange lady to her face that she is unfortunately not welcome because she might be a criminal. A real dilemma for members of the English middle class.
The author Steven Moffat is probably known to many through the TV series "Doctor Who" and "Sherlock" with Benedict Cumberbatch. He acted as author and producer for the latter. A Murder Girlfriend is his first play.
