The classicist theater from the beginning of the 19th century still delights its visitors.
Putbus is still preserved in many places as Prince Malte zu Putbus had it built as his residence at the beginning of the 19th century. One of the most outstanding buildings of this unique urban ensemble is the classicist theater. According to the plans of the master builder Karl Friedrich Schinkel the court theater of Putbus was built in the years 1819/1821. The main front of the Putbus Theater deliberately faces the location of the castle. Guests of the prince thus got to see the most beautiful view of the house on the way from the castle to the theater. The central part is decorated by a four-column portico, behind which there seem to be three main entrances. The stucco frieze above it depicts Apollo and the Muses. From 1992 to 1998 the theater was extensively reconstructed. In the process, a design was chosen that is very close to the original state. With 244 seats, it impresses not only with its harmonious design but also with its familiar atmosphere and excellent acoustics.
Today the theater belongs to the Theater Vorpommern.
