The village green brings together the Wiesenpark, the church, the community center, the Wossidlo House, and the Alte Ausspanne, creating a vibrant village center.
“On the day before St. John’s Day, a marriageable girl must pick seven different kinds of flowers at noon, weave them into a wreath, and place it under her pillow on St. John’s Night; then she will see in a dream what kind of husband she will get!” I wonder if people could have had that same dream at the Alte Ausspanne in Walkendorf?
The “Alte Ausspanne” is a historic, lovingly restored, thatched half-timbered house that, together with the “Wossidlo-Haus,” the church, the community center, and the village pond, forms the old village green. Then & Now: Guests are warmly welcome!
In the past, travelers had to navigate miserable country roads, which the carriages couldn’t withstand for long. They had to be repaired at the blacksmith’s, and both people and horses needed rest and safety at such a “rest stop.” Back then, sinister figures and ambushes in the darkness often plagued many a traveler. If it didn’t actually happen, he would at least dream of it on his straw mattress, since beds were reserved only for special guests.
The route connecting Hamburg, Güstrow, Demmin, and Stettin to St. Petersburg brought many interesting personalities to the “Alte Ausspanne.” Stories are told of Tsar Peter, Wallenstein, and Gustav Adolph Wasa. More recently, it was Prince Charles and our Minister President.
