In a hitherto unique way, public and scientific interests are combined in the floating seal station in Hohe Düne, because the research facility is also open to visitors. From the sun deck, vacationers and day guests can experience the daily life of the eight male seals and an African fur seal. Through smaller guided tours/lectures, all guests are brought a little closer to the everyday life of the research. The animals are part of the world's largest seal research facility with dimensions of 60 by 30 meters, whose institute building is a disused passenger ship. A group of biologists led by Prof. Guido Dehnhardt from the Institute of Biosciences at the University of Rostock is investigating the animals' sensory perception and underwater orientation in long-term experiments. It is possible for all interested visitors to observe this and follow the investigations.
For those who want to learn more about the research work with the seals, there are three offers available for booking outside the daily opening hours: The scientific team offers a "one-hour guided tour", during which the handling of the animals, their way of life and the research work are explained. Those who would like to get up close and personal with the seals can book the "Seal experience up close" offer in advance. In the working area, guests are introduced to animal training and can also pet the seals.
