In the western part of the Island of Rügen, away from the hustle and bustle and traffic stress, lies the island of Öhe, off the coast of the town of Schaprode.
It covers approximately 75 hectares and has been privately owned for many generations, with the family having farmed here for a long time. Its secluded location makes the Öhe a special part of the National Park of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft and offers ideal conditions for natural and near-natural agriculture and livestock breeding. All cultivated areas are located directly on the water’s edge and are subject to nature conservation regulations. Here, one finds a unique variety of grasses and herbs, which, thanks to their high salt content, are particularly palatable to the cows and calves that graze here during the summer months.
On the one hand, grazing provides seabirds with safe nesting and resting places; on the other hand, it makes an important contribution to coastal and nature conservation. The highest point on the island is the 3.3-meter-high Fuchsberg.
