On the former market square of the middle town you can now find gabled houses, seagull fountains with Greek gods and the town hall. The latter was built around 1270 as a two-story double gable house with a vaulted cellar.
The town hall with its seven towers bears witness to the eventful history of the old Hanseatic city of Rostock like no other secular building. A mighty Gothic façade and red brick buildings, ornamental Renaissance forms, Baroque porticos and functional office buildings stand side by side in the complex, which was built over the course of several centuries, and form the visible expression of the city's community. The town hall has changed again and again and adapted to new requirements, but it has always remained the seat of the council and the mayor, a place of consultation and assembly for the citizens and above all: the center of the town.
