Barlach Town Güstrow

Imposing Palace Building and Playful Pleasure Garden

Ernst Barlach was already enthusiastic about the residential town of Güstrow. No wonder, given the imposing palace building with its playful pleasure garden in front of it, the old town with its half-timbered houses, the classicist town hall and the awe-inspiring cathedral, which today houses a sculpture by Barlach.

Güstrow Castle and the cathedral from the air - Barlachstadt Güstrow

"Güstrow is a Place where you can live - Despite Italy", Ernst Barlach.

With great pride, the city of Güstrow may call itself "Barlachstadt", because the sculptor, graphic artist and playwright Ernst Barlach settled here in 1910 and lived in Güstrow for almost 30 years. Today, three museums in Güstrow commemorate this important artist of the 20th century. In the Güstrow Cathedral even, the sculpture "The Floating" created by Ernst Barlach, adorns the venerable walls.

The Jewel in the Heart of the City

A well-known landmark of Güstrow is the Güstrow Castle. The popular photo motif of every visitor to Güstrow was built in the Renaissance style and completed in 1671. Guided tours through the castle offer historical insights worth knowing about past years.

Always worth a walk is the associated castle park, this was designed in the same Italian style as the castle and is in the form a rarity in Germany. Low box hedges now enclose nine beds of equal size. Shady arbors of hornbeam and an artificial moat enclose the area and harmoniously integrate the garden and palace into the city's system of ramparts and moats.

Stroll Through the Old Town

How about an impressive night watchman tour through the old town of Güstrow? Because Güstrow delights with numerous town houses of different eras, the classicist town hall, hidden cafés and galleries as well as picturesque backyards.
