The region around the Müritz, Germany's largest inland lake, combines six charming towns right on the water, unique natural landscapes and fascinating flora and fauna. Numerous water sports facilities and a well-developed network of cycling and hiking trails also make the region a popular destination for active vacationers.

Europe's largest closed lake district

A unique, lock-free water landscape stretches from the Müritz to Lake Plau, forming the heart of the Mecklenburg Lake District. This impressive world of lakes not only showcases nature, but also invites you to enjoy numerous activities on the water. Whether sailing, canoeing or stand-up paddling, water sports enthusiasts will get their money's worth here.

For beach holidaymakers, there are numerous picturesque beaches and bathing spots that invite you to swim or simply relax on the shore. Anglers will find ideal conditions here to hook pike, zander or perch.

Even without your own boat, the region is wonderful to explore from the water. Passenger boats connect the most beautiful places with each other, and those who prefer a more individual approach can start their vacation on the water with a houseboat - without a license. This way, the water is not just a backdrop, but the focus of an unforgettable nature experience.

Discover historical treasures by the water

Embedded in the idyllic landscape of the Mecklenburg Lake District, the water connects the charming towns of the region: the spa town of Waren (Müritz), the climatic health resorts of Plau am See and the island town of Malchow as well as the resorts of Röbel/Müritz, Göhren-Lebbin and Rechlin. Impressive town centers were built here as early as the 13th century, and their medieval charm can still be felt today. Picturesque old towns with lovingly restored half-timbered houses, imposing monasteries and historic buildings invite you to explore. Exciting museums and exhibitions provide fascinating insights into the natural and cultural history of the region, while traditional events and festivals keep the cultural heritage alive.

Experience nature actively

In addition to the glistening lakes, the region also boasts impressive forest landscapes. The Müritz National Park is particularly fascinating, offering a protected habitat for numerous animal and plant species with its extensive forests, moors and lakes. A real highlight are the Serrahn beech forests, which are under special protection as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Ancient Beech Forests of Germany". You can explore the landscape on your own on well-developed hiking and cycling trails.

The wildlife is particularly fascinating: white-tailed eagles, otters and cranes are not uncommon here. If you take your time and walk through nature attentively, you will be rewarded with unforgettable impressions - whether on an extended hike or when visiting the numerous nature experience centers in the region.
