The colossi of Europe up close...

Damerower Werder is a peninsula in Lake Kölpin in the Mecklenburg Lake District and is located in the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. A bison reserve has been located here since 1957, one of the largest breeding stations in the world, operated by the Nossentiner Heide Forestry Office. The preserve was built to maintain a genetic reserve for the dramatically depleted bison population. On an area of 320 hectares, about 30 to 35 bison live permanently and under natural conditions among deer, stags, foxes and wild boars. About ten young animals see the light of day here every year.

At the information center, visitors can get an insight into bison breeding and tickets for the reserve, where the animals can be observed. Show feedings take place daily at 11:00 and 15:00. New in the bison reserve is a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual boards and a dendrophon - a kind of xylophone made of branches of different tree species, which allows you to experience the different sounds of the woods.

In May / June, births can be experienced live. A red deer gate promises exciting moments in September/October. Covered observation points allow visits even when it rains. A cozy restaurant invites you to linger. Live footage of the bison, red deer and from a peregrine falcon nest can be viewed on two screens in the reception building.
