Venice, 1750. "The Servant of Two Masters" is to be performed, an absolute classic and highlight of the commedia dell'arte. Unfortunately, the plague is raging and the actors are gradually disappearing. So the remaining three actors have to slip into all the roles so that Truffaldino's story can be performed. It begins when, by chance, he first becomes Signore Rasponi's servant and a short time later - driven by his empty stomach - also signs on with Florindo. The crux of the matter is that it would be extremely unseemly anyway if it were known that Truffaldino was serving two masters at the same time. When it also transpires that Signore Rasponi is not who he, or rather she, claims to be, the chaos is perfect and while Truffaldino rushes from one master to the next, the audience can hardly stop laughing.
