West Bank, 1988: When young Noor (Muhammad Abed Elrahman) is seriously injured during a protest, his mother Hanan (Cherien Dabis) begins to tell the moving story of her family. The story takes us back to 1948, when Noor's grandfather Sharif (Adam Bakri) refuses to leave Jaffa to protect his house and orange grove. But war, expulsion and captivity tear the family apart. Sharif's son Salim (Saleh Bakrī) grows up in the shadow of his homeland, which he never really knew. Decades later, when Noor protests against Israeli soldiers, fate seems to repeat itself. But in the midst of the crisis, Hanan and Salim make a courageous decision that gives the family new hope - and promises a path to reconciliation...
Director and writer Cherien Dabis paints an epic portrait of a family in the West Bank over three generations, in which personal destinies and the history of a people are inextricably interwoven. 'In the Shadow of the Orange Tree' aka 'All That's Left of You' (2025) premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2025 and received rave reviews. At the San Francisco International Film Festival, the film won the award for Best Feature Film and the Audience Award. The audience at the Sydney Film Festival was also enthusiastic and awarded the Audience Award. Filmmaker Dabis, chosen as one of the '10 Directors to Watch' by the industry magazine 'Variety', is of American-Palestinian origin. With this universal family epic, she succeeds in interweaving complex historical realities with very personal memories and capturing them in a human, hopeful narrative. In addition to Dabis in the leading role of mother Hanan, the young actor Muhammad Abed Elrahman can be seen as Noor and the actress Maria Zreik as Munira. The male roles were played by the internationally renowned Bakri family of actors: Mohammed Bakri as the old Sharif and his sons Adam Bakri as the young Sharif and Saleh Bakri as Salim.
