Mona Fastvold tells the story of Ann Lee, who founded the free church Shaker movement in Manchester in 1736. It's a movie about community and spiritual ecstasy, but what a movie! It's not an expensive historical set piece, but a musical drama shot on 70 mm analog film, in which the soundtrack inspired by traditional Shaker hymns provides its own structure and rhythm. While gospel, chorales and electronic sounds fluidly intertwine in catchy songs, bodies shriek rhythmically through candlelit scenes, transforming the cinema itself into an intoxicating, transcendental cathedral. Divided into an overture and three chapters, whose titles tease a development from girl to woman, to mother, Fastvold follows the protagonist.
