Lecture on the occasion of the presentation of the Stralsunder Hefte für Geschichte, Kultur und Alltag 01/2026 Speaker: Steffen Melle, Stralsund
Steffen Melle has been dealing with various local history topics for a long time and is known to many Stralsund residents as the author of his publications on the history of the harbor pub "Zur Fähre", on the merchants of the Scheelehof and most recently the history of the pubs in Stralsund's old town from the Middle Ages to the present day. In the current issue of Stralsunder Hefte, he looks at the history of one of Stralsund's oldest streets. Fährstraße was mentioned in 1270 as "Verstrathe" in the First Stralsund Town Book. From the Middle Ages onwards, it was a center of wealthy merchants who shaped the city's trade, commerce and politics. The lecture provides an insight into the development of the Fährstraße from the Middle Ages to modern times. The author introduces the merchants, craftsmen and other tradesmen who lived here as well as historically significant personalities who lived in Fährstraße.
