THE EXHIBITION IS AN INVITATION TO EXPERIENCE ART ANEW IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT EVERY SKY TELLS A STORY FOR THOSE WHO KNOW HOW TO SEE IT.
Can the play of light between the clouds be captured in paint? Can a storm rage in bronze? Artists have always set themselves the challenge of capturing the whims of the weather. They capture shimmering summer light on canvas, give form to thundering storm clouds, bring roaring gusts of wind into the material or capture the quiet expanse of snow-covered landscapes.
Between cheerful and dramatic cloud formations and polyphonic landscapes, the exhibition unfolds a panorama that goes far beyond open-air painting. The weather becomes an artistic mouthpiece: it underpins mythical tales and religious scenes, carries moods, condenses the longing for peace or heralds the storms of war. The works on display are characterized by an incomparable blaze of color and emotional power.
On display are masterpieces by artists such as Rudolf Bartels (1872-1943), Franz Bunke (1857-1939), Anna Gerresheim (1852-1921) and Paul Müller-Kaempff (1861-1941) from the important artists' colonies of Schwaan and Ahrenshoop. The exhibition is complemented by impressive loans from the Kunsthalle Rostock and the Stadtmuseum Güstrow as well as prints and sculptures by Ernst Barlach (1870-1938).
Many of the artists worked in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at the same time, creating a unique artistic echo. In the fascinating diversity of their works, the weather becomes an ambiguous reflection of feelings and hopes, but also a symbol of the beauty and overwhelming power as well as the transience of nature.
