The novel of the same name by Albert Camus is considered by many to be unfilmable, but François Ozon's adaptation succeeds in opening up new perspectives.
France 2025, Written, directed and produced by Francois Ozon, Length: 120 minutes
DA: Benjamin Voisin, Rebecca Marder, Pierre Lotion and others.
In Algiers in the 1930s, the camera follows Meursault through a uniform everyday life of work, the sea and casual sensuality. The relationship with Marie is determined by physical closeness, not inner emotion. The antagonist is the sleazy Raymond, whose violence against his Algerian girlfriend draws Meursault into a spiral of conflict that culminates in the fatal shooting of her brother. As in the novel, the subsequent trial is less about the crime than the deviation from the norm.
