From the Fall of the Berlin Wall to German Reunification

November 9, 1989, marked a turning point in Germany. After the SED government in the GDR built the Berlin Wall in 1961, it was torn down 28 years later. Alongside great joy and relief on both sides, uncertainty about the future also crept in. Most of the GDR’s residents were unprepared for this. This was accompanied by very limited understanding of the social market economy across the board.

While many successfully took advantage of the new opportunities, there were just as many bitter disappointments in the new society. What did this mean for people in the East and West? How did politicians respond in both parts of Germany? What led to the fall of the Berlin Wall? What were the catalysts, and who were the key figures? How is German reunification perceived and experienced in Germany today? In his multimedia presentation, featuring documents and in-depth research, the speaker will attempt to provide answers to these questions while also shedding light on a wide range of perspectives.

Speaker: Thomas Lukow, Berlin / former long-time freelance contributor to the Stasi Museum on Normannenstraße and the Federal Chancellery in Berlin
