“From Bach to Brel”—This is a fascinating blend of classical music and chanson featuring compositions spanning three centuries: Bettina Bergmann (flute), Angela Maria Stoll (piano), and Alina Sarah Stoll (chanson and host) bring the tradition of salon culture to life in all its historical facets.
Since time immemorial, society has gathered at court to find inspiration and entertainment in the music of Bach, Frederick the Great, Blavet, Mozart, Beethoven, and many others. Later, during the Romantic period, domestic music-making became popular. Salons sprang up where guests were invited for tea to listen together to the words of great poets and enjoy chamber music.
Such “events,” where artists and culture enthusiasts come together, are once again enjoying great popularity today.
Through music and lyrics, this trio of female artists transports the audience to the salons of Berlin and Paris. There, people sang, argued, philosophized about life itself, and gossiped.
The program features works ranging from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Impressionist periods to chansons by Friedrich Hollaender, Werner Richard Heymann, and Jacques Brel.
