“Once Upon a Time…”
Fairy Tales, Myths, and Musical Narratives
“Once upon a time”—this familiar phrase opens up worlds of imagination, suggestion, and inner imagery. We encounter such narrative forms in music as well: without words, but with a language of its own that brings the fairy-tale-like, the mythical, and the personal to life.
Performed by a trio as well as various duos, a series of works unfolds that shape the narrative in very different ways—as musical poetry, atmospheric scenes, or poetic memories.
Following Mozart’s elegant, chamber-music-style opening, Clarke’s folklorically inspired “Dumka” leads into the famous, virtuosic “Passacaglia” after Handel, arranged by Johan Halvorsen
After the intermission, the fantastical and the pictorial take center stage even more: Szymanowski’s impressionistically iridescent Myths, inspired by ancient mythologies, and Janáček’s episodic *Pohádka*, based on a Russian fairy tale, create sonic scenes that hover between reality and dream.
The program concludes with Schumann’s late-Romantic fairy-tale narratives—miniatures that do not narrate but rather suggest: music that focuses on memory, inner life, and the unsaid.
