With its new concert program, “New Beginning 2.0,” the Brass Band MV is performing in Waren (Müritz) for the fifth consecutive year.
Under the musical direction of Timo Hänf, this young ensemble presents a special program centered on the piece “St. James – A New Beginning” by Philipp Harper.
In this work, the conductor of the world-renowned Cory Welsh Brass Band—which has been performing since 1884—sets to music the events during and after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Divided into four acts, the first half of the piece musically and powerfully depicts the fire and the despair amid the smoldering ruins, until the inferno finally comes to an end.
In the second half, urban planner Sir Christopher Wren takes the musical stage. Guided by his vision of a reborn cosmopolitan London, he designed entire neighborhoods, thereby playing a pivotal role in driving the London Renaissance. The title is derived from two sources: St. James Church on London’s prestigious Piccadilly, designed by Wren, and the English chorale of the same name, which serves as a recurring motif throughout the roughly quarter-hour-long piece.
“The piece itself is not only superbly composed but was also performed in 2023 by a world-class band competing at the highest level in international competitions. I’m proud that this young band has the ambition to play at this level,” says Timo Hänf, conductor of the Brassband MV.
You can also look forward to other lively pieces in the program. Our percussionist Maike from the mallet section will perform “Highland Fling” by Andrea Crossley, a piece for xylophone and brass band.
In addition, you can look forward to music from Broadway, ballads by Billy Joel, New Orleans street music, hip-hop, and other virtuosic solo performances on euphonium, cornet, and trombone.
The concert also marks the conclusion of the 16th workshop and is the Brass Band MV’s final performance of 2026.
