A petite, elderly woman with a modern appearance, a resolute demeanor, and a strong will: this is how Marianne Farrere, played by Isabelle Huppert, sits at the head of the conference table before the all-male members of the board of directors. She is the heiress to a major cosmetics company. Marianne is a disciplined woman entangled in a web of expectations and obligations, of wealth and luxury, and in a marriage and motherhood from which all emotion has long since vanished. But then she is confronted by the capricious photographer Pierre-Alain Fantin, who is supposed to style her for the cover of a fashion magazine. With his overbearing audacity, he teases her, yet at the same time she is fascinated—by his exuberant zest for life and bubbling imagination. While her family is horrified, she takes pleasure in being catapulted out of her comfort zone. A relationship develops that bears all the hallmarks of a platonic love story, for Fantin—who is openly gay—also smuggles his lover into the refined family circle.
