Early 1980s: Paul Gompitz lives in the GDR. He hadn’t actually intended to leave his homeland. But he wants to travel—especially to Italy. Ever since reading Johann Gottfried Seume’s *A Walk to Syracuse*, he has dreamed of taking that same journey himself. All attempts to leave the country legally fail, and over the course of several years, Paul begins preparing his escape by sailboat. After his journey, however, he wants to return.
