Cannes 2026 · Grand Prize in the Un Certain Regard section · Germany's Oscar entry for 2027
Sandra Wollner's film is a study of grief and an exploration of memories unlike anything seen before in cinema.
Germany/Austria 2026, Director: Sandra Wollner, Running time: 121 minutes
Starring: Birgit Minichmayr, Tristan Lopez, Carla Huttermann, Lotte Schirin Keilmann, and others
The camera sweeps in a long shot over Berlin’s facades, then slowly zooms in on the roof of a red prefab building, where two teenagers are lounging around, high on drugs. The camera continues to move across the facade, then over a dense canopy of tree tops, through which a body suddenly shoots toward the ground. With this punch in slow motion, a cinematic study of grief takes its course—one unlike anything seen in cinema before. How can Ella cope with the sudden death of her 17-year-old daughter? What do family and memories mean? Wollner addresses this question—as she did in her previous two films—in “Everytime” as well. She weaves an ever-tightening web around Ella, her young daughter Melli, and Lux, who seeks closeness with the two of them. Ella has Lux give her the drugs her daughter consumed on her last evening and walks with him down the path back into the past.
