In competition at Cannes 2025
USA/Finland 2025, Written and directed by Ari Aster, Length: 148 minutes
DA: Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal a.o.
Eddington, New Mexico, population 2345, spring 2020: Corona has arrived, even if it's hard to associate with this western setting at first, and it's causing the same
upheavals as elsewhere on the globe. The main characters are the conservative Sheriff Joe Cross, who initially strives for balance and reason. He is an opponent of the strict mask requirement, but not a supporter of crude conspiracy narratives. On the other side is the progressive mayor Ted Garcia, who is adamant about enforcing the lockdown and the mask requirement. He is determined to push through the large-scale data center project on the outskirts of the town if he is re-elected. But an escalating argument between the two leads to Joe spontaneously running against him. From then on, everything is dominated by this escalating election campaign, which deepens the rifts in the community.
