At the beginning of the movie, Alex and Tess's relationship is already at its end. After many years together and despite having two sons, they somehow seem to have lost their togetherness - without much drama; now they have to inform their mutual circle of friends about the separation and move into their own apartment for Alex. Instead of anger or frustration, helplessness and sadness dominate their emotional world. When he accidentally ends up on the open-mic stage of a comedy club one evening, Alex finds an unexpected way to explore and come to terms with his new life situation. Without anyone around him noticing, Alex blossoms in the New York stand-up scene and begins to sort out his own emotional balance. And while Tess also fills her everyday life with new or old content, in which the former top athlete revives her passion for volleyball, it finally becomes apparent that it may not have been a lack of love that became a problem for their marriage.
