Simon Verhoeven's film adaptation of Joachim Meyerhoff's autobiographical novel is anecdotally touching - with a very convincing Bruno Alexander.

Immediately after the funeral of his older brother, who died in a car accident, Joachim informs his parents that he wants to apply to the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich. Conveniently, his beloved grandparents live in Munich. His grandmother is the actress Inge Bergmann (Senta Berger). She has adapted the drama, the big performance for her life, but is amusingly quirky in the process. The grandfather (Michael Wittenborn) is the philosopher Hermann Krings: clever, a little eccentric, lovable. Together they lead a ritualized, eccentric everyday life in a stately villa with champagne for breakfast. Life between the stair lift and evening whiskey hour is the complete opposite of drama school, where Joachim is actually accepted and struggles a little. He prefers to be the observer rather than the extroverted actor. Some of the acting exercises are indeed absurd, some of which Joachim refuses to do, which doesn't make them any less funny.
