Oratorio PAULUS

This musical narrative about the life and work of the Apostle Paul—and his transformation from Saul to Paul—is one of the most significant works in the Romantic oratorio repertoire. Mendelssohn composed his “Paulus” on a timeless biblical foundation, exploring such significant themes as transformation, faith, and hope, inspired by Bach’s Passions. On July 8, 1840, the oratorio was performed in Schwerin Cathedral by 340 singers and 150 orchestra musicians under the composer’s direction, following its premiere in Düsseldorf in 1836. Grand Duke Paul Friedrich had invited the most famous conductor of his time to serve as artistic director for the second North German Music Festival in Schwerin. It is therefore a truly special occasion when this moving and soulful work is performed in concert on September 19 at the cathedral.
