BLONDZHENDIKE LIDER (Wandering Songs)
"Blondzhendike Lider" is an album that was conceived as a "modern Jewish work of art", but what is a Jewish work of art? Imagine two people, one of whom has spent his entire life in Brooklyn and the other in Vitebsk. If the two were to meet by chance, they would be amazed to discover that they ate the same food and that their mothers used the same words to switch and praise them. Another thing they have in common is their multiculturalism, as both the Belarusian and the American also carry the culture of their home country within them. The Yiddish language itself provides the best symbol of this, as it is based on Middle High German and is written in Hebrew letters.
"Blondzhendike Lider" (an allusion to the famous novel by Scholem Alejchem "Blondzhendike Shtern") has several levels: it defines itself as a contemporary Jewish work of art, is the process and product of the Jewish-Ukrainian-German musician Kateryna Ostrovska's search for identity. Perhaps it is even a pseudo-scientific experiment to clarify the extent to which this "cultural cocktail" represents a plus, a minus or an alias of "Yiddishkeit". The first creative impulse for the project came when Kateryna Ostrovska read the poetry collection "Splinters of Light and Night" by four Yiddish poets. "I was completely overwhelmed, felt closeness, belonging, comfort and home, wanted to communicate with these women with spiritual quintessences and stimulate an exchange with other artists in order to create a 'spiritual home for the homeless'."
The work is now complete, with a 50-minute performance, over 50 participating artists and an itinerary spanning Hamburg, Berlin, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, St. Petersburg, Chişinău and Sofia. "Blondzhendike Lider" owes its orchestrations to the pen of Paulo Aragão, whose arrangements Kateryna Ostrovska discovered on Guinga's Grammy-nominated album "Noturno Copocabana". The recordings were largely financed by the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media. The album was released on 23.9.22 and was greeted with acclaim by the German and international press.
