By Bertolt Brecht (text) and Kurt Weill (music) with the collaboration of Elisabeth Hauptmann / Harztheater
Brecht's congenial play has lost none of its topicality for almost a hundred years. Set in the unscrupulous gangster milieu, the romance between the robber Mackie Messer and Polly, the daughter of the beggar king Jonathan Peachum, is governed by the harsh rules of capitalism, "organized" poverty is a hard-fought business and self-interest is always at the forefront.
The play owes its success to the brilliant fusion of drama and musical theater as well as the legendary songs by Kurt Weill. The Moritat von Mackie Messer, the Kanonensong and the Eifersuchtsduett became popular hits shortly after they were written almost a hundred years ago.
Just in time for the 70th anniversary of Bertolt Brecht's death, the Harztheater is staging a new production of "The Threepenny Opera", a major, interdisciplinary joint production of musical theater and drama.
