Revolt, revolt! Painting, graphic art, and textile art come together and break with academic rigidity!

What happens when techniques that are usually considered separately come together? In our creative course, you’ll combine methods from painting, graphic design, and textile art to create something new, while exploring one of the great questions of art: How can the human body be represented?

Layer by Layer to New Surfaces

The focus is on working in layers. Paint, prints, fabric, thread, and found materials are layered, compressed, and then revealed again. This creates surfaces with a character all their own: sometimes colorful, dense, and multifaceted; other times calm, minimalist, and understated. You’ll experiment with how the materials interact and develop a sense of when a piece is finished—and when another layer opens it up rather than closing it off.

From Image to Figure

Over the course of the workshop, old textiles and various materials are transformed into images or small sculptural figures, depending on where your work takes you. The shift between two-dimensional surface and three-dimensional volume is expressly encouraged: a piece of fabric can serve as a painting surface or become a three-dimensional form. The workshop demonstrates the diverse ways in which forms can be conceived and designed in art: as an outline, as volume, as a shell, or as a fragment.

Course Instructor

The workshop is led by Pauline Stopp, a mixed-media artist who combines materials and techniques across genre boundaries in her work.

Who is this course for?

The workshop is open to adults, teens, and children accompanied by their parents, with or without prior experience. More important than technique is a willingness to experiment. Materials will be provided; you’re welcome to bring your own old textiles that hold special meaning for you—a worn shirt, a piece of bedding, scraps from your sewing basket. Please wear clothing that can get stained.
