Rostock Zoo is home to 6,500 animals of 500 different species from all over the world. The diversity of animal species ranges from small to large, from pygmy marmosets and gorillas to penguins and polar bears. Extensive landscapes, large aquariums and terrariums - the naturalistic facilities are embedded in a 56-hectare park landscape, which is characterized by botanical features in addition to its animal inhabitants.
With walk-through facilities and very special insights into the homes of the zoo's inhabitants, many animals seem to be within reach. Visitors can come face to face with big cats, great apes, sloths, pygmy hippos and many others.
The world of the great apes in the Darwineum
Evolution becomes an exciting experience at the Darwineum. Starting with the formation of the earth, it takes you on a journey through the different geological eras. In eight themed booths, extraordinary animals and contemporary witnesses show how life on earth has developed, how animals have opened up new habitats and what wonders of adaptability evolution has produced.
The heart of the Darwineum is the huge tropical hall - the home of the great apes. Gorillas and orangutans live here in close proximity and in peaceful company with brazzame cats, white-handed gibbons and sloths. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of the great apes through large windows and from a high visitor bridge.
On the trail of polar bears and penguins in the Polarium
The North and South Poles are only a few meters apart in the Polarium. The expedition begins in the southern hemisphere with the Humboldt penguins. The popular tailcoats live in a large enclosure here, which is modeled on the penguins' native habitats and offers the animals plenty of space and variety.
A few steps further on, the realm of the kings of the Arctic opens up to you. Our polar bears have more than 3,500 square meters of space to play, rest, explore, swim and dive.
The Ice Worlds are dedicated in a special way to the endangered habitat and way of life of the polar bears. Finally, in the marine worlds, you can dive into the realm of the oceans.
