Historical Buildings, Churches, Brick Gothic, barrier-free

St. George's Church is one of the three large main churches in Wismar and an outstanding architectural monument of North German brick Gothic. It was once the place of worship for craftsmen and tradesmen. The origins of St. George's lie in the 13th century. Its construction thus falls into the turbulent time of the late Middle Ages and the Reformation.

Dresden has the Frauenkirche - Wismar has St. Georgen.

The church, which was badly damaged in the war and later left to decay, has been rebuilt since 1990 with the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, and interior work began in 2007.

Originally, the church was begun in 1290 as a three-aisled vaulted hall church. In the early 14th century a larger basilical choir was added and in 1404 the complete reconstruction into a basilica began. The height effect inside is breathtaking. At 35 meters high and 10.55 meters wide, the nave is as impressive as that of Wismar's Nikolaikirche.

The newly opened viewing platform on St. Georgen provides a new and impressive view of the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the Old Port, and can be reached by elevator.

Concerts are held regularly in the church. (Festspiele MV, NDR Symphony Orchestra).

Opening hours:
April - September: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
October - March: 10.00 to 16.00 o'clock
