Wonderful winter experiences

in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Published: July 30, 2025

Cold happiness: Whether by rowing boat or canoe - in wintry Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, water hikers are alone with themselves and nature on over 2,000 lakes and rivers.

Surfing, canoeing, camping or fishing - anyone who thinks that these and other activities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are only possible in summer is mistaken. There is also plenty to experience in winter.

1. saunas

Houseboat cruise in winter? But only with a sauna!

Is it too cold on the houseboat in winter? No way! The new sauna houseboats from Kuhnle-Tours offer particularly cozy time-outs in the Mecklenburg Lake District. An efficient heating system makes it possible to travel outside the summer months too. The special feature: Guests can, for example, have the heat blown out of their bones on the roof terrace or, if the weather is right, even warm themselves in the snow. After refreshing themselves, sauna guests can relax in the large relaxation room in the bow. In spring, with a bit of luck, you might even be able to watch cranes through the large window at the stern while enjoying the sauna. Incidentally, the sauna houseboat has 15 hp and can therefore be driven without a license.

2. paddling

Paddling through the glittering tree trellis

Paddling through a white trellis of trees paddling is a special experience. On winter days, for example, the Warnow River offers a breathtaking atmosphere for water fans. It has its source near the state capital of Schwerin in the heart of Mecklenburg and flows into the Baltic Sea in Rostock. The Warnow breakthrough valley is quite wild in places, but about 50 kilometers before the Hanseatic city it becomes a leisurely lowland river. Sections that are perfect for family paddling tours in summer can also be experienced by the hardy in winter. Accompanied by a guide from Wanderer Aktivtour, for example, you can enjoy the tranquillity of the enchanting landscape on the river.

3. surfing

It's never too cold for a good session

When frigid waves lash against the beach, where otherwise a 20-meter-wide strip of powder separates the Baltic Sea from the sea, weatherproof water fans are at Surfing is just the thing here: winter neo on, hood up and off into the waters. The open areas along the 2,000-kilometer-long Baltic Sea coast offer the action you want at any time of year. No matter which way the wind is blowing, there is the right spot for every direction - and for every level. The shallow Bodden waters are more suitable for beginners. There are big waves for pros on the Baltic Sea. If you don't have a board with you, there are numerous rental stations in winter. In summer, equipment is usually available directly at the wave location.

4. fishing

Dress really warm: Fishing adventures as a winter experience

Fancy a fishing adventure in winter? Against an enchanting backdrop of frosted trees, a fishing trip to the Baltic Sea and Bodden coast or inland lakes is something very special. In the Mecklenburg Lake District, for example, predatory fish such as perch, zander and pike are particularly large at this time of year and are undisturbed on the waters that are less frequented in winter. Guests with little fishing experience can, for example, join one of the guides from Müritzfischer or the fishing experts from Seewirtschaft Fleesensee, who will guide them to the best spots even in winter. If you do not have a valid fishing license, you can purchase a tourist fishing license and a fishing permit.

5. sailing

Brown sails on the ice

If you want to experience a regatta spectacle in a winter setting, you should keep an eye on the weather forecasts during the cold season and make your way to the Fischland-Dar&szligst peninsula at the right time. This is where ice sailors take to the ice on their traditional sailing sledges in favorable wind conditions. In the Ahrenshoop district of Althagen and in Wustrow, the conditions are usually the most favorable: the low water freezes well with little prevailing current. Local shipwrights and fishermen used to make these sailing sledges with oak runners set in iron. The mast and rigging often came from the small fishing boats, the so-called with the typical rust-brown sails.

6. camping

Winter camping on the Baltic Sea and lakes

What could be more relaxing than sitting in a cozy, warm camper with a hot mulled wine and looking out over the cold, wintery Baltic Sea? On the coast and in the Mecklenburg Lake District, around 26 of the sites organized in the state association of the camping industry are also open in the winter months and offer a good alternative to vacation apartments, guesthouses or hotels for caravans and motorhomes - a winter vacation in the middle of nature, so to speak. Many of the camping sites have great offers and activities on offer. Little winter guests, for example, can recharge their batteries after hikes through wintry forests or snowball fights by playing in indoor play halls.

A small selection of campsites that are open in winter can be found at Campingland-MV.
