On the trail of Ernst Barlach in Güstrow

A city and its famous artist

Ernst Barlach, born in Wedel in 1870 and died in Rostock in 1938, is undoubtedly more popular than almost any other artist of the 20th century in Germany. He had his roots in the north, more precisely in Güstrow in Mecklenburg. Even around 80 years after his death, he is still omnipresent here.

The exceptional artist, who settled permanently in Güstrow in 1910, owes his importance above all to his wooden sculptures. The Doubter and Laughing Old Man are among the masterpieces of German Expressionism. In addition to his impressive sculptural work, Ernst Barlach was also active as a draughtsman, graphic artist and writer.

In Barlach's studio house on the Inselsee and the historic Gertrudenkapelle, the Ernst Barlach Museums Güstrow present the world's largest coherent collection of works by the internationally renowned artist.

The most famous Barlachst statue, however, is the Güstrower Dom. The city's oldest building today houses what is probably the expressionist's most famous sculpture. The „Hovering Man“, cast entirely in bronze and illustrating the painful events of the First World War, rests horizontally above the heads of the many visitors.

Special exhibitions alongside concerts and creative workshops invite visitors to rediscover the art of Ernst Barlach in Güstrow.
