Ernst Barlach, born in Wedel in 1870 and died in Rostock in 1938, is undoubtedly more popular than almost any other artist of the 20th century in Germany. He had his roots in the north, more precisely in Güstrow in Mecklenburg. Even around 80 years after his death, he is still omnipresent here.
The exceptional artist, who settled permanently in Güstrow in 1910, owes his importance above all to his wooden sculptures. The Doubter and Laughing Old Man are among the masterpieces of German Expressionism. In addition to his impressive sculptural work, Ernst Barlach was also active as a draughtsman, graphic artist and writer.
